In the 16 biennial International Conferences organised so far, from the year 1979 to 2011, the hazards connected with the technology advancement to facilitate Space exploitation have been widely discussed and explored.  Risks such as satellite technology failures or malfunctions during launch or in-orbit operations are now a common understanding and statistically managed.  Their economic impacts can be reasonably evaluated within a range of millions.  Hazards like the growing presence of Space Debris, Cyber Terrorism and Signal Jamming are now carefully monitored for industrial, governmental, financial and insurance perspectives.  Therefore, this year’s event will continue to give room to further develop these issues.

However, the impact of Space Storms, in a modern world relying more and more on technology and Space systems, is attracting a growing attention of governments, international institutions, industries, national emergency services, risk management specialists, insurers, etc.  Loss events supposedly or certainly attributed to the Solar Max phenomena have already occurred and a few have also involved the insurance market.  However, in a majority of countries, the general knowledge of Space Storms and their potential catastrophic effects, with an impact of billions, is currently far away from being adequate and capable to facilitate the evaluation of the full extent of these phenomena. The insurance industry is also heavely engaged to understand how deep can be the implications of these events on covers they currently offer and to prepare tailor-made solutions for the future.

Speakers will represent, to mention a few, Arianespace, Inmarsat, Telespazio, European Commission, Norwegian Space Centre, UK Space Agency, ASI, NASA, DLR, ESA, Italian Air Force, British Airways, NOAA, Swiss Re, European Parliament, XL Insurance, JLT, Atrium insurance, OECD, The Geneva Association, Sputnik Insurance Centre, Munich Re, AIG insurance, Marsh insurance broker, AON insurance broker, Telecom communications company, Thales Alenia Space, etc..
